Birsa Agricultural University was established in 1981 and is approved by UGC. The University offers UG, PG and PhD programmes in numerous specializations. Admissions to the courses are on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance examinations.

Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi (BAU-R), carved out of Rajendra Agriculrural University (RAU), Samastipur (Bihar) in 1980 with the major objectives of perfecting area-specific, need-based, low-cost, system-responsive farm technologies for the undulating topography and resource-poor farmers of Chhotanagpur & Santhalpargana region, was formally inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi on 26th June, 1981. Ranchi-based Agriculture College, established in 1955, College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, set up in 1961 and Asia’s first Forestry College, established in 1979 were brought under the control of BAU.

Centre for Biotechnology, set up in 1999 for offering postgraduate programme in the subject, was upgraded as College of Biotechnology in 2005.of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, set up in 1961 and Asia’s first Forestry College, established in 1979 were brought under the control of BAU.
